How long it takes to recover post ankle arthroscopy?

Ankle arthroscopy is a simple minimally invasive technique. It is used by ankle arthroscopic surgeon to treat ankle joint issues. The process includes a thin fiber-optic camera called an arthroscope that magnifies and transmits images of the ankle to monitor.

Disorders cured through Ankle arthroscopy

1. Ankle arthritis

For patients with last-stage ankle arthritis, ankle fusion forms a treatment option. This fusion can be performed through the minimally invasive technique of ankle arthroscopy and has proven similar and many times even better results.

2. Ankle fractures

For fracture repair, both open and minimally invasive techniques can be simultaneously applied. It helps provide normal alignment of bone and cartilage.

3. Ankle instability

The stretched-out ligaments, seem like an ankle collapse. In such cases, surgery needs to be performed to tighten them. For moderate instability, arthroscopic techniques can be performed.

4. Anterior ankle impingement/ Athlete’s ankle / Footballer’s ankle

Soft tissue or bone (positioned at the front of the ankle joint) gets swollen. Ankle pain and swelling are part of it, it causes the inability to turn the ankle up. Trekking or walking uphill becomes a task. inflamed tissues and bone spurs (Osteophytes) seen on X-ray are shaved away through arthroscopy.

5. Arthrofibrosis

It is a painful and stiff joint due to the scar tissue formed inside the ankle. Ankle arthroscopy not only identifies the scar tissue but also removes it.

6. Infection

Infections immediately need surgery to clean the joint. Best done through arthroscopy.

Recovery

Pain and swelling are normal post-surgery. Oral medication and leg elevation can help you handle both. This might continue for several days. Depending on the type of surgery and advice of the surgeon, you might be asked to walk right away or to wait for months.  Sutures generally are removed within one to two weeks of surgery.

According to Dr Ashutosh Shrivastava (Sr Consultant Orthopedics & Joint replacement surgeon & HOD Orthopedics in Asian Institute of Medical Sciences) “It is entirely surgeon’s prerogative to evaluate the condition and recovery of the ankle”. Dr. Ashutosh is one of the best orthopedic surgeons in Faridabad and known for his high rate of successful surgeries.
